Shows that Annoyed the Fire out of Me

I went to the coffee shop last night to work on ebay stuff (yeah wireless!) and they have a big-screen TV there. I wanted to just get to work, so I didn't bother changing the channel, even though I was pretty much the only one there. It was on FOX, which we don't actually have here on the Dish.

The first show was called BONES and is a CSI knock-off (or as Mattie called it, "a knockout"). The plot centered, or should I say "swirled around" (like a toilet) a foster mother with three boys, one of whom was murdered. I know it was just a TV prop, but they showed a badly decayed corpse of the little boy. I found it tremendously disturbing and unnecessary. Since when is it entertainment to see something that horrifies any parent? The plot was absolutely REDICULOUS and while trying to be all "understanding" about the foster-care system, it was riddled with half-truths that will only perpetuate wrong ideas in the mind of the public (I use that word loosely...I'm pretty sure not enough people were watching this lousy show to call it "the public." Maybe "the handful" or "the desperate" or in my case, "the too lazy to change the channel.") It preyed on people's worst fears. And besides that, that guy from Buffy The Vampire Slayer was in it, and I couldn't help expecting him to bite into the neck of the lead acress's neck at any moment.

The next show was "House" which is a cross between "Becker" the grouchy doctor comedy, "Scrubs" the overly touchy-feely medical students show, and "ER" the overly preachy but I still watch it because I have for years original medical drama. The gist of this one was that a guy who works for a pharmacuetical company is trying to get people to send drugs to help people with TB in Africa. So he ends up the hospital with a multiplicity of symptoms which he is kind of hoping is TB so he can refuse drugs to get publicity for his cause. Turns out to be tumor of some kind that is treatable. SO....what did the show do for Africa? Nothing. Just made a nice dramatic backdrop for the character. Again, horrifying real-life tragedy like what is happening to people in Africa is NOT entertainment.

Fortunately, the Simpson came on next and I was able to have a real moment of entertainment before packing up my work and heading home. FOX, stick with something you are good at.

Most of the normal people were watching the epic struggle between two mammoths in the college footbal coaching world and their teams wrestling on the field as Penn State ultimately beat Florida State in the 3rd overtime. So, I doubt many people saw the disturbing shows as you suspected, especially last night.

I figured a Pennsylvania girl would have been watching and rooting for thos Nittany Lions!!

Sandy, I have some rules for myself because quite frankly, I LOVE tv. I always have...so I never turn it on during the day...only at night when the kids are to bed. What I will do when they can stay up...who knows? How I get anything done is really a mystery...housework keeps cutting into my blogging and ebaying!

Sara: Our neighbors on Staten Island used to call Robb "Ned Flanders." He took it as a huge compliment.

A: Yes, of course I have a fondness for those Nittany Lions, but as I stated earlier, I was too lazy to change the channel : )

mpzezy: Sandy's blues name when she plays the bass

Ness...hope my comment didn't offend you. I really just meant that I would have trouble not getting *sucked in.* After a long day of kids and homeschooling, guess I need less distraction to function, LOL!

not at all...mice and bad tv are offensive...not you : ) I'm a global learner, I guess. I function better with about ten things going. If I only have one thing going on at a time, I just procrastinate and figure I can do it later. That's why the house is so dirty...I had so much time over the break, I figured I would just do it all ....later. Which is why i gotta run now!

Wait a minute, Sara - Ned's wife died! You can call me Rev. Lovejoy if you'd like.

So how much ebay stuff did you get done?

I uploaded over 150 pics so listing will be a snap....when I eventually sit down to list instead of just checking the blogs.... : ) "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow..."

Yea! You see a *dirty* house as the sign of an artisan and not a procrastinator...whoo hoo, I got it made now!

Robb- i think there is just something wrong about me calling you "Rev Luvjoy"

But since we both want Vanessa to live...didn't Ned flanders re-marry. It has been a while since i've watched the Simpsons

Ned did remarry but it wasn't as much fun as watching him try to date. I have a hard time picturing Robb as Rv. Lovejoy just because said Rev. is kind of kinky and Robb's my brotherinlaw....ewwww.
Do what I do, Ness, get the series you actually like (for me, west wing) on DVD and just watch it when time allows. No commercial, fast forward for the slow parts and no credits. Plus you can pick the show to fit your mood and ignore the fact that the show is dying off on REAL TV.
My problem was never regular tv...it's the food network and discover channel and since we have NO tv right now, I can, in fact, get a few things done....like watching season 5 of the west wing through the holidays without anyone caring. Dora even directs the music for the intro (very funny).
