I suppose this would probably be illegal and/or unethical, but it would be so cool if we could set up a coffee/tea shop and/or gallery/thrift store there during the week.
I suppose it's a mortally dangerous business mixing church with commerce, but wouldn't it be great if something could be created that would at least cover the rent so that raised monies could go to helping people and to community efforts rather than paying rent/utilities.
It could be a non-profit/co-op type affair.
It could meet a couple of different needs--it could serve as a community center for people in the church (need a coffee shop to have, say, a book club or small group meeting--it would no longer be a pain in the bu--er, keister--to arrange). If somebody falls onto hard time and needs a job for a bit, they could work as a barista/gallery manager for a bit until they can get another job. It seems like there might be a lot potential.
I'd better shut up now before I finish calling down the lightning upon myself.
Um, Matthew....are you stealing ideas from me in my sleep???? That's absolutely in my dreams....My brother's church in Houston is doing it...bookstore/coffee shop/art gallery. I love it because it isn't "wasted space" and it gives people a place to gather. It's being done so I'm pretty sure it CAN be done.
There's a lot of opportunities but also a lot of difficulties and potential for conflict (not the "folks can agree to disagree" kind, but the "death to the vile heretics" kind).
Still, the thought of paying that much rent for a building that's just going to sit vacant a large chunk of the week is deeply vexing to me.
Wowzer. You said you saw the fingerprints of God all over the situation...I see the work of Ness. Love the triangle things in the kids room, the pumpkins..the men's room When we were going up to Mt. P to that Church they had a work day, and I ended up painting the men's room as it was just bare wood, and nasty. Everyone thought that was really weird-but I could work alone, have huge impact and looked better than when I started.
WOW that is totally amazing, beautiful, awesome. YOu did a great job! I love the table when you first walk in the door. Beautiful! A true labor of your love!

great job...i have had the coffee shop/used book store/crafty/artsy place longing too but i know i am not a business woman.
