One FUN day!

After a crazy weekend, it was time to do something fun today with the fam.

In honor of the day, we went first to explore the Confederate Cemetery here in Fayetteville. Quietly tucked into the side of hill, the cemetery is the resting place of those who perished in the battle of Pea Ridge and the battle of Prairie Grove, as well as several war widows. With no new graves and just a few of the widow's graves decorated, these people have long since returned to dust. I find these kinds of cemeteries very soothing for some reason. I paused by the gate while passing under the stone and iron arch that is typical of so many cemeteries here in The South. I suppose it gives me perspective...all these people lived their lives and breathed the air and smelled flowers and felt fear and wonder and anxiety and respect and love...and now they sleep quietly in this dark mossy yard.

Piling back in the car, we began a discussion about life and death and sin and redemption that was entirely beyond my kids, and yet they kept asking one insightful question after another.

Forty five minutes later, we found the Wild Animal Park & Safari that I have been hearing about since we moved here, but nobody had ever actually been to. With low expectations, we pulled into the line of cars waiting at the unimpressive gate. But already, we could see all kinds of animals...from kangaroos to zebras, pygmy goats to Texas Long Horns, peacocks, emu and more...and the adventure began! Saving the large petting area for last, we drove into the Safari area which were instructed to enter with our windows up at all times and doors closed for safety...

Here's what we saw....

(of course, those bird ones are for Tammi)
And here are the things we got to hold and see up close...

And here's my favorite pic of all which I took with no zoom...just feet away from this little mother.

By the way, that is a lemur on my husband. I couldn't get good pictures of the wolves, dingo, baboons, tigers, lions, bears, watusi, caribou, and peacocks. Can you name the other animals???

Yeah! I loved family day trips growing up. Though...I have to admit...seeing the stuff live in Kenya was the coolest!

Yikes.
You really should be careful exposing your children to large birds like that.

They eat children.

really.
